In October, January, and April, teachers order rewards from The Shadow Project’s “Shadow Store”, a key part of our Goal Setting program, to celebrate their student’s hard work.
Volunteers will fulfill and pack teacher orders, which include books, school supplies, games, sensory tools, and self-care items. This takes place at our Shadow Project warehouse.
Volunteers must complete our Hold Harmless Agreement before volunteering. Accessibility information: Volunteers will be walking and standing for long periods of time and lifting boxes up to 20lb. There is one designated accessible parking spot, but there are lots of front row parking spaces. The ramp is directly to the right of the accessible parking. Other notes - Masks are optional. - There will be snacks and water available. - Wear comfortable clothing and bring a layer, it can be a bit chilly in the warehouse.
Please wear close-toed shoes, and comfortable clothing.
The mission of The Shadow Project is to make school more accessible and engaging for K-8 students with learning challenges like dyslexia, ADHD, autism and trauma. We envision an education system that normalizes and celebrates learning differences, and supports every student to thrive in school.
The Shadow Project offers group and individual volunteer opportunities to support our students, teachers, families, and staff. Volunteers support our mission through various activities such as: - Warehouse activities: packing "shadow store" orders for teachers with student incentives through our Goal Setting program; Family Reading Kit assembling, to distribute to students at school events for free - Reading Mentoring: volunteer in schools and work one-on-one with students with learning challenges, motivating them to set and achieve weekly reading goals using assistive reading technology and an extensive audiobook library. We partner with schools in the Centennial School District and Portland Public Schools. - Translation: translating family and student documents into the following languages - Somali, Vietnamese, Chinese, Spanish, Ukrainian, Russian
