In this volunteer opportunity, you'll be helping distribute food to over 900 families by stocking shelves and products, unloading trucks, moving boxes, sorting produce, and much more! Volunteers are an integral part of Birch Community Services. In 2023, volunteers contributed over 33,000 hours. A unique aspect of BCS is that all our families volunteer 2 hours each month, so you'll be volunteering alongside the people you are serving. Tasks vary from stocking shelves and recycling boxes to sorting produce and other donated items. There's always something fun to do! Birch Community Services' mission is to build a financially stable community by providing education, food, and nurturing accountability.
Volunteers should wear closed-toed shoes and comfortable clothing.
There are no specific safety measures for volunteering at Birch. If you have any physical limitations, make sure you tell your supervisor when you arrive.
Birch helps 900 families annually to gain their financial footing by getting out of debt. Families enroll in our Sustainable Families Program (SFP) and improve financial stability through Birch’s four pillars: Food. Education. Freedom. Legacy. Food: By relieving some financial pressure and preventing food insecurity, our participants can reach their financial goals by creating a margin in their budget, and experience a higher quality of physical and emotional health. Education: Our one-on-one financial goal planning and Re$tart course empower and equip families with tools to get out of debt and carve a path toward financial independence. Freedom: Our families transition from the program as they meet their financial goals. Legacy: As a result of completing our program, our families are equipped to educate their children about finances and end the poverty cycle. In partnership with over 270 manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers, farms, dairies, bakeries, and food growers, Birch redistributes approximately 13.7 million pounds of food that would have been wasted each year to families who need financial relief. We currently have 618 participants who make weekly shopping trips to our warehouse throughout the program, which offers families immediate stabilization and financial relief. During these trips, our families select an average of over $1,000 per month worth of nutrient-dense groceries and household items. Next, we offer comprehensive financial literacy education. By four to six weeks into the program, each participant meets with our Financial Literacy staff for one-on-one goal setting and creating a family vision. Participants then complete the four session, 6-hour Re$tart financial literacy course that offers the knowledge and tools to stabilize and gain financial freedom. Families can participate for as many months or years as they need.
Volunteers are an essential help to Birch! Volunteers will stock shelves, sort produce, and organize the shopping floor. If you have a group of over five people, we try to have a special project ready for you to all work together!
