Hello! We are a nonprofit meal service provider led by a culinary-trained and a professional cook -- our founder. We make meals from scratch and use rescued food surplus as much as possible. We cook in bulk, enough for 320+ portions. Saturdays are for distributing family meals to 80 families.
You will be helping us take the mission to the finish line --to deliver meals and make tummies happy! You are assigned an optimized time-saving route through a cool mobile app, Circuit for Teams. Typical route for delivery goes between 10am - 12:00pm. When there are more drivers, we finish earlier. Most shifts last under 2 hours if there are no additional stops and the pre-mapped route is followed. We cover most of the greater Portland area in the counties of Multnomah and Clackamas. Bring a hand towel, water bottle, and a car phone charger. Check in no earlier than 9:30-9:45am for dispatch.
No long-term or regular commitment required. Must have a valid driver's license and auto insurance. MCK pays the subscription fee of Circuit for Teams driver subscription at zero cost to you. Your login info and route assignments are sent prior to your shift, no later than Saturday morning. You will be paired with another volunteer who will be remotely helping you with any issues (such as getting through a locked apartment building with a broken call box, etc). It's nice to have a set of eyes looking out for you! If you are new, you will be contacted with a link to the online on-demand 30-minute self on-boarding ahead of your assignment. This is an LGBTQIA2S+ safe and friendly space. All are welcome. Good to bring a phone charger for your car and a wiping towel in case of food spillage (very, very rare).
Overcoming barriers to food security by cooking and delivering cost-free family meals to those in need, no questions asked. Each week volunteers come together to cook and deliver a chef-prepared meal to over 80 families in need. Each meal feeds up to 4 people at no cost, no questions asked. If they are humble enough to ask for a meal, we are gracious enough to provide them with one. Grassroots and community-supported, we help feed low income families, caregivers, single parents, adults and children with mental and physical disabilities. We partner with local food hubs, food businesses, farmers, and farmers markets to help reduce food waste while eliminating barriers to food security. We believe in the power of community and removing barriers to accessible food. Since our founding, we have been providing our services at no cost, no questions asked because we believe that accessible better food is a human right. Volunteers get to work alongside us and make a direct and immediate impact whether in the kitchen, on the road, or remotely.
Thank you for your interest in volunteering with MCK! Our critical work in reducing hunger and fighting food insecurity is made possible because of community support. We are always in need of volunteers. The process is easy and simple and does not require a commitment. Opportunities for kitchen, delivering, and even remote help are available. If there is a skill set or particular role you currently don't see here but would like to chat about with our team, leave us a comment or send an email to info@milkcratekitchen.org or text/call 971-808-2851. Interested in working on a project or sending your team for a group volunteering experience? We'd love to hear from you!

We have drivers who do this in pairs, listen to podcast, are new to this city, and those who are looking to get to know neighborhoods beyond downtown and the inner Portland.
