We're thrilled to welcome you into the Rose Festival community this year and truly appreciate your enthusiasm to decorate the Grand Floral Parade Big Floats during "DEC WEEK." The Big Float Barn is open during DEC WEEK from Saturday, June 1 through Friday June 7 and there are 4 shifts daily.
Creativity and teamwork will make the Grand Floral Parade floats fabulous! Decorators help put the finishing touches on each Big Float. Along with a crew chief, float decorators help paint the base colors for each float and decorate with live materials like seeds, beans, rice and of course FLOWERS! You will cut and prepare both dried and fresh flowers, and other materials. You will glue these materials onto the float as directed by your crew chiefs. Volunteers may rotate through many different jobs during their shifts.
Parking: The Big Float Barn is in a warehouse is at 6136 NE 87th Ave., near PDX airport. There is plenty of parking. Prep: We recommend that you wear old clothes that can get dirty or spotted with glue or paint. Comfortable shoe shoes are a must and if you’d like to sit, bring a folding chair. The temperature in the Float Barn is always slightly cooler than the outdoor temperature so dress accordingly. Refreshments: Bring a water bottle and your own refreshments. There is an area for snacking but no eating or drinking is allowed near the floats. Size: Groups are usually 10-20 but we can accommodate many sizes and abilities.
Each group is asked to stay in the immediate vicinity of their own float. Respect other people’s materials and work area. Decorators must receive proper instruction before using any ladder or scaffolding. No smoking or alcohol use in the warehouse. Volunteers must be 12 years of age and anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
The Portland Rose Festival Foundation is a non-profit that serves families and individuals with programs and events that promote the arts, education and volunteerism. We value environmental responsibility, diversity, patriotism and our historic & floral heritage. Part of Portland’s popular culture for more than a century, the Rose Festival has its roots in tradition while its programming is both contemporary and nostalgic. With over 120 community, cultural and affinity groups this year, the Rose Festival is one of the most enjoyable ways to make a positive difference in the place we live.
Join the Parades by lending a hand and play a crucial role in making downtown Portland active and fun! Parade Guides help support Rose Festival parades to ensure safety of participants and spectators by actively managing street closure barricades. Volunteers act as the "eyes and ears" around the parade route and work with our on-site safety team to report any incidents. Join the groups decorating the magnificent Big Floats or help create the beautiful Mini-floats. Being creative is rewarded by decorating the Grand Floral Parade floats. Float decorators help paint the base colors for each float and decorate with live materials like seeds, beans, rice, and, of course, FLOWERS!
