Juneteenth is a historic event that celebrates the end of slavery in the United States, and we believe that it's crucial to honor this day and its significance. We're looking for volunteers who are committed, dependable, and eager to make a positive impact.
Every year, our Juneteenth Oregon celebrations begin with a parade, followed by an array of festivities including live music and entertainment, art, food, educational booths, cultural exhibitions, community resources and a children’s play area. Make an impact with other like-minded members of the community by volunteering your time to Juneteenth Oregon. As a volunteer, you'll help us to set up for our event. Tasks may include: * Final event setup * Monitoring the kid's area * Assist at the volunteer check-in booth * Admissions and crowd monitoring (count attendees at entry/exit gates, monitor crowd) * Traffic and parking assistance (directing attendees to loading areas and designated parking areas) * Beer and wine garden admissions (check IDs, ensure alcohol stays in designated areas) * Event clean up (picking up debris, emptying trash cans) * Any additional tasks that may arise
Wear comfortable shoes, bring a jacket just in case (we are rain or shine). We will provide tshirts for volunteers!
In Oregon, Juneteenth Oregon Celebration was founded 50 years ago by the late and beloved community leader Clara Peoples. The celebration of Juneteenth Oregon dates back to 1945 when Peoples introduced the tradition from Muskogee, Oklahoma, to her co-workers at the Kaiser Shipyards in Portland. Upon moving to Portland in 1945, Clara Peoples was surprised to learn that the Juneteenth holiday was unknown in this part of the country. She introduced the holiday to her co-workers at the Kaiser Shipyards during their break being the first Juneteenth Celebration in Oregon. Later Clara helped to initiate Portland’s annual citywide Juneteenth celebration in 1972. Juneteenth Oregon’s celebration starts with a parade, followed by the festivities which includes live music and entertainment, art, food, educational booths, cultural booths, community resources and a children’s play area. Mr. & Miss Juneteenth Oregon Program: provides education, tools, and resources to help youth build resilience, gain confidence and make positive life choices. We aim to empower black and brown youth in Oregon and SW Washington. We accomplish this mission through… **Workshops** We host workshops throughout the year that help our program participants gain skills to manage or reduce stress, develop or improve resilience, set goals, nurture social circles, apply for college and manage finances. The program aims to help motivate, inspire, and educate, providing lessons and pulling from experiences that are not discussed in a traditional classroom setting. **Mentoring** We know that black and brown youth benefit socially, emotionally and academically from mentoring relationships with nurturing and consistent adults. We seek to place program participants with engaged and active mentors in order to ensure our program participants get the encouragement and support they need to thrive. **Leadership Development** Our leadership development curriculum helps black and brown youth develop skills to intentionally and positively influence the actions of others through a culturally specific lens. We emphasize not only learning about leadership but practicing leadership through service learning opportunities in the community. Juneteenth OR has many opportunities to get involved.
