Help make easy-to-construct outdoor shelters out of plastic storage bins to keep feral cats warm and dry during the winter months. Find the full step-by-step instructions for building these cat shelters here. Best if hosted by the participant group, but can be held at the FCCO building in South Portland. For materials, we often have donated shelter supplies that groups can pick up from us to do this activity. In the case that we don't have supplies, we ask that groups purchase the materials needed to build the shelters. Of course, groups are always welcome to donate materials for this activity, even if we have them available. Estimated material costs: Storage tote (one needed for each shelter) - $13 Bubble insulation roll (each roll can be used for 1.5 shelters) - $10 Gorilla Tape roll (each roll can be used for 8 shelters) - $6 Based on these estimates, the cost of materials per shelter comes out to roughly $20. If you're interested in this activity and want to verify supply availability, please send us a request and we'll let you know if we have enough donations for your Team.
Full instructions of the activity can be found [here](https://static1.squarespace.com/static/55c945e0e4b04386fb9f8162/t/59d7e68ff9a61eab9bac4393/1507321489369/CatShelter-BuildingGuide.pdf).
Please wear long pants and closed toed shoes.
You will need to cut a door in the bin using a saw or drill. Please use caution when working with power tools and wear appropriate safety glasses.
The mission of the Feral Cat Coalition of Oregon is to improve the welfare and reduce the population of feral and stray cats through spay/neuter programs and education. Also known as FCCO, we are a non-profit spay/neuter program that was founded in 1995. We have helped more than 130,000 cats and remain the only organization in the area dedicated to providing the level of services that we do for feral and stray cats. For each feral or stray cat in our care we request a donation of just $50, but never turn a caregiver away even if they cannot contribute. This program is known as trap-neuter-return.
Volunteers support is vital to FCCO's mission and programs. Volunteer groups can help us improve the welfare of feral and stray cats by building outdoor shelters to keep cats safe and warm.
