Reach 5,500+ high school students and educators in one day by hosting a booth at the NW Youth Careers Expo on Tuesday, March 19, 2024.
## The 20th anniversary NW Youth Careers Expo will take place on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, from 9 am to 1:30 pm at the Oregon Convention Center! Volunteers host exhibitor booths to showcase jobs and careers in their industry, and they talk to students and educators who want to learn more. Many booths have demos or other hands-on engagement to help spark conversation. The purpose of the Careers Expo is to help high school students learn about future careers, as well as any current jobs, volunteer opportunities or internships. The 20th annual NW Youth Careers Expo will take place on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, from 9 am to 1:30 pm at the Oregon Convention Center, and it is preceded by an optional PWA Expo Breakfast to get inspired and fueled up for the day. Exhibitor rates range from $400 for nonprofits to $800 for private-sector employers and include all basics (electrical, wi-fi, pole-and-drape and table/chairs). Exhibitor fees help defray the cost of renting the Oregon Convention Center. Employers can also sponsor the Careers Expo, which supports access for underrepresented and marginalized communities, while also supporting the year-round work of PWA. Organizations with significant cost barriers can contact PWA directly for more information.
Volunteers should wear comfortable clothing and shoes, and they should bring lunch and snacks. (Your booth may be very busy, and no one wants to get hangry!) Bring a positive attitude and channel your inner extrovert: High school students can be shy and some may need YOU to initiate the conversation. Also, please make your space as welcoming as inclusive as possible: Having volunteers from a diversity of backgrounds helps students “see themselves” in your industry. Consider bringing handouts or other takeaways. Another great way to communicate is by having basic “Your Company 101” information on a few large posterboards that describe who you are, what you do, and what kinds of jobs/careers you have. You can also use QR codes to share more detailed information.
Volunteers are asked to follow any applicable public-health guidelines or school protocols. These may include wearing a mask or showing proof of vaccination.
PWA believes in big dreams and good careers for all high school students. We see meaningful access to career development as a matter of social and economic justice. PWA works with local employers and educators to create partnerships and experiences that help high school students develop their career aspirations, skills and goals. We welcome all students, with extra outreach to higher-poverty and marginalized communities, and we aim to help regional employers connect with their next generation of talent.
Every year, we work with partners to create thousands of opportunities for high school students to discover their career aspirations. Volunteers and employers can engage in many ways, such as 1) hosting a 2-4 hour “Career Day” for a small group of high school students at their worksite, 2) participating in mock job interviews, 3) hosting a booth at the NW Youth Careers Expo, 4) hosting or joining a session of one of our career-mentoring programs. PWA provides volunteer support for all experiences as well as intentional outreach to students from higher-poverty campuses and underrepresented communities.
