Host a group of 10-50 high school students at your workplace, and help inform and inspire them about future careers!
Volunteers host a group of high school students at their worksite, with PWA taking care of all student outreach, permission slips and external logistics. Career Days tend to include 1) personable employees from an inclusive variety of backgrounds who chat candidly with students about their work, education & career paths, 2) opportunities for students to interact with each other and participate in an activity or simulation, and 3) useful career-search or interviewing tips, sometimes combined with mock interview opportunities. PWA works with you to develop an agenda that fits into your workday. We collaborate with local schools to recruit and register students, and we provide 1-3 staff members to help things run smoothly. The typical Career Day is about 25 students and lasts about 3 hours, but size and duration are up to you: Great experiences can range from 10-50 students and 2.5-5 hours.
Volunteers should wear comfortable clothing and bring their authentic selves. Students appreciate candor and relatability. Any visuals or examples are always welcome. (Adults can be abstract. It helps students to see concrete examples and to get basic information about what you do and why you do it.)
Volunteers are asked to follow any applicable public-health guidelines or school protocols. These may include wearing a mask or showing proof of vaccination.
PWA believes in big dreams and good careers for all high school students. We see meaningful access to career development as a matter of social and economic justice. PWA works with local employers and educators to create partnerships and experiences that help high school students develop their career aspirations, skills and goals. We welcome all students, with extra outreach to higher-poverty and marginalized communities, and we aim to help regional employers connect with their next generation of talent.
Every year, we work with partners to create thousands of opportunities for high school students to discover their career aspirations. Volunteers and employers can engage in many ways, such as 1) hosting a 2-4 hour “Career Day” for a small group of high school students at their worksite, 2) participating in mock job interviews, 3) hosting a booth at the NW Youth Careers Expo, 4) hosting or joining a session of one of our career-mentoring programs. PWA provides volunteer support for all experiences as well as intentional outreach to students from higher-poverty campuses and underrepresented communities.
